This machine, purportedly the first vehicle to explore the “two wheels in a line, one leg on either side” design is known as a “Dandy Horse”. It would take about forty more years before someone would invent pedals, and another twenty before another gent worked out the idea of chain drive, the sprockets’ mechanical advantage allowing the abandonment of the penny farthing’s signature gigantic wheel. I wonder if these dandy horses were ever used for a game of dandy polo or a dandy fox hunt.
